Whether you're arriving in Olbia, exploring the coastlines near Porto Cervo and Porto Rotondo, or navigating the lively streets of Cagliari, understanding ZTL zones is key to a smooth, stress-free journey. This guide covers the essential regulations to help you avoid fines.
ZTL stands for Zona a Traffico Limitato, or "Limited Traffic Zone." These areas are common in Italian cities and are designed to protect the beauty and walkability of historic centers. In Sardinia, ZTLs are strictly enforced.
⛔ Important: Cameras monitor ZTL entrances, and fines are issued automatically even if you’re unaware you've entered a restricted area. Fines often exceed €65 plus administrative fees.
Do not rely solely on GPS. Look for the physical sign at the street entrance:
Covers much of the old town: Corso Umberto I, Via Regina Elena, Via delle Terme, and Piazza Margherita.
These streets are pedestrian-only during most hours. Read our full Olbia ZTL guide.
Enforces temporary ZTL rules around the main square, marina, and Promenade du Port. Strict enforcement in July and August.
Restricts vehicle access near the marina and main piazza. Streets become pedestrian-only in the evenings and weekends.
Multiple zones in Castello, Marina, and Villanova districts. Entrances can be narrow and easily missed by tourists.
Generally, tourists cannot drive into ZTL zones unless their accommodation has registered the license plate with local police *before* arrival. Rental12 properties do not provide ZTL access because we have a safer alternative.

For guests staying in Olbia’s historic center, we recommend using private, secure parking that sits just outside the ZTL boundary. This avoids the risk entirely.
Our facility at Via Sassari 20 is gated, monitored, and allows you to walk to your apartment in 2-5 minutes.
✅ With this setup, you can drive into town, park safely, and walk to your apartment without ever passing a camera.
A ZTL (Zona a Traffico Limitato) is a limited traffic zone that restricts vehicle access to protect historic centres. In Olbia ZTL, cameras and signs mark the perimeter; entering without authorization can trigger fines. Travelers often search for “ZTL Sardinia rules” or “Olbia ZTL map” — always check signs and hours at each gate before driving.
ZTL hours vary by city and season. The Olbia historic centre ZTL is controlled by automatic cameras that read license plates at entry. If you see a green/active indicator or specific time windows on the sign, the ZTL is enforced. When in doubt, avoid entry during peak evening hours and weekends or use parking just outside the ZTL.
Use parking near the Olbia ZTL and walk in, or obtain a valid permit/plate registration if eligible. Guests at accommodations inside the zone should confirm if their host can register their vehicle in advance. For an easy option, consider our secure facility just outside the ZTL: Olbia Parking (Via Sassari 20).
Sometimes. If your accommodation is inside the Olbia ZTL, ask whether they can request a temporary ZTL permit or license plate authorization for loading/unloading. Without explicit confirmation, do not enter: cameras will record the plate and ZTL fines may follow via the rental car provider.
Park just outside the Olbia ZTL and continue on foot for the historic centre. For beaches, drive directly from outside the centre to the coast. For a stress-free base near the zone, see secure parking at Via Sassari 20.
