Quick Guide

Pack for North Sardinia in three layers: linen/cotton for hot days (May–October), one warm sweater + light jacket for evenings, and a windbreaker year-round. Bring SPF 50 reef-safe sunscreen, polarised sunglasses, flat leather sandals (never heels — Olbia's cobblestones break them), and 2–3 Type-L Italian plug adapters. Skip: beach towels, hair-dryer, iron, full-size toiletries — every RENTAL12 apartment stocks all of these plus an AZULIS toiletries starter set.

Italy & Sardinia specific extras

Quick answer: Five Sardinia-specific items most travellers forget: Type-L Italian plug adapter (sockets in Olbia mix L, C, and F), an Italian eSIM or SIM (Iliad / TIM Tourist), ZTL paperwork screenshot (driver's licence + rental contract + Olbia ZTL map), coin pouch for blue-line beach parking meters, and a foldable tote — single-use plastic bags are banned in Italy and supermarkets charge €0.10–€0.30 per bag.

Most forgotten

Type-L plug adapter (×2–3)

Italy uses three socket types — C (2-pin Europlug), F (Schuko round), and L (three-round-pin Italian). Older apartments and Sardinian buildings often only fit Type L. Bring 2–3 universal adapters; one is never enough for a couple charging phones, laptops and camera at once.

Smart traveler

Italian eSIM / SIM

EU travellers roam free. Non-EU: TIM Tourist €15 / 30 GB / 30 days (buy at OLB airport arrivals), Iliad €9.99 / 250 GB, Vodafone Holiday €30 / 300 GB. App eSIMs: Holafly, Airalo, Saily.

Don't get fined

ZTL driving paperwork

Olbia historic centre is a ZTL — no permits are issued to tourists. Bring driver's licence, rental contract, passport, and a screenshot of the ZTL boundary map. Park at Via Sassari 20 (RENTAL12 guest parking) and walk in. Fines start €87.

Practical

Coins for parking

Blue-line beach parking meters at Pittulongu, Bados and Porto Istana take €1 and €2 coins — many do not accept cards. Keep €10 in coins in the glove box. Free options exist outside June–September.

Eco rule

Foldable tote bag

Single-use plastic bags are banned in Italy. Supermarkets charge €0.10–€0.30 for a biodegradable bag. Pack one nylon foldable tote per person — useful for groceries, beach gear, and ferry day-trips.

Hydration

Reusable water bottle

Olbia tap water is safe and good. Public fountains exist near the harbour and Corso Umberto. Skip bottled water — saves money and the recycling bin (Sardinia's strict separate-waste system is real).

Don't bring — waste of suitcase

Quick answer: Eight common items that take up suitcase space but never get used in Sardinia: stiletto heels (cobblestones), full-size shampoo (we stock AZULIS-brand), beach towels (provided), beach umbrella + inflatables (€10 locally), hair-dryer + iron (in every apartment), formal wear / suit + tie (beach-chic dress code), guidebooks (digital is better), and US-only electronics without dual voltage.

❌ Stiletto heels Granite cobblestones break thin heels. Bring flat leather sandals or low-wedge instead.
❌ Full-size shampoo AZULIS toiletries already in every apartment. Save 600 g.
❌ Beach towels Provided per guest, refreshed every clean. Save 1.5 kg.
❌ Beach umbrella Local tabaccheria sells them €8–€12. Inflatables same — buy at Conad.
❌ Hair-dryer / iron Every apartment has a 2000 W dryer and full iron + board.
❌ Suit & tie Even Porto Cervo clubs are linen + loafers. Save the dry-cleaning bill.
❌ Printed guidebooks RENTAL12 in-apartment Smart TV has digital guidebooks. Save 800 g.
❌ US 110 V electronics Italy is 230 V. Check the small print — most modern chargers are dual voltage; older ones fry.

From the team that hosts 15,000+ guests

Quick answer: Two takeaways from our team: Kristina (COO) sees the same forgotten item over and over — the Italian Type-L plug adapter — and the same waste-of-space — full-size toiletries. Simon (Operations) handles workation guests and has refined a short list of work-from-Olbia gear that prevents 90% of Wi-Fi or screen frustrations.

Kristina — COO

"As COO, the single most-forgotten item I see across 15,000+ guests is a Type-L Italian plug adapter. Bring two or three. And skip the full-size toiletries — every RENTAL12 apartment is stocked with an AZULIS starter set of shampoo, shower gel and body lotion. Your shoulders will thank you at baggage claim."

— Kristina, Co-founder & Chief Operating Officer · Meet the team
Simon — Operations

"For workation guests, here's my proven kit: USB-C laptop charger with EU plug, a 2 m HDMI cable so you can use the apartment's Smart TV as a second screen, noise-cancelling headphones, and an Italian eSIM as Wi-Fi backup (TIM Tourist 30 GB / €15 at OLB arrivals). Add a folding bamboo laptop stand and any dining table becomes ergonomic. My favourite remote-work café is Caffè Costantino on Corso Umberto — fast Wi-Fi, strong espresso, friendly to laptops before noon."

Packing FAQ — what guests ask us

What should I pack for Sardinia in July or August?

What is the complete packing list for a Sardinia holiday in peak summer (July or August)?

For July and August pack 3 swimsuits, linen and cotton only, a wide-brim hat, SPF 50 reef-safe sunscreen, polarised sunglasses, flat sandals plus one pair of leather flats for evenings, a light cardigan for A/C, and a microfiber towel — RENTAL12 apartments stock full beach towels, hair-dryer, iron and a Miele washing machine.

July and August are linen-and-swimsuit weather with peak sun (28–32°C inland, 24–26°C sea). Three swimsuits let one always dry. Skip synthetic fabrics — they trap heat and stick. A wide-brim hat is essential. Reef-safe SPF 50 sunscreen is a Sardinia requirement for several marine areas. Bring polarised sunglasses for driving and boat days. Add one light cardigan because Italian restaurants run A/C cold.

Do I need to bring a beach towel for Olbia?

Do RENTAL12 apartments provide beach towels, or should I bring my own?

No. Every RENTAL12 apartment provides full-size beach towels for each guest plus a beach bag, refreshed at every clean. You can leave bulky cotton beach towels at home and save 1.5 kg per person of luggage allowance.

Beach towels are one of the heaviest items most travellers pack and one of the items RENTAL12 fully stocks. Every apartment comes with proper beach towels per guest plus a beach tote. Some apartments also include a cooler bag. Bringing a small microfiber travel towel is still useful for boat days if you don't want to take the apartment beach towel.

Is there a hair-dryer in RENTAL12 apartments?

Does every RENTAL12 apartment have a hair-dryer, iron, and washing machine included?

Yes, every RENTAL12 apartment includes a full-power hair-dryer (1800–2000 W), iron and ironing board, Miele washing machine, and an AZULIS-brand toiletries starter set with shampoo, shower gel, hand soap and body lotion. You do not need to pack any of these.

All 34 RENTAL12 apartments are stocked to hotel-plus standard. The hair-dryer is full-power (1800–2000 W, not the weak hotel travel kind). The washing machine is Miele in nearly all properties. Skipping these saves ~2 kg of luggage and is one of the reasons our long-stay guests can travel with carry-on only for one-month stays.

Do I need a plug adapter for Italy and Sardinia?

What kind of plug adapter do I need for Italy, and how many should I bring?

Yes. Italy uses three plug types — C, F, and L — and most apartments mix all three. Bring a universal adapter that supports Type L (the three-round-pin Italian standard) and ideally two to three units so multiple devices can charge at once. USB-C wall chargers with EU plugs work well as space-savers.

This is Kristina's #1 most-forgotten item across 15,000+ guests. Many older Italian apartments only accept Type L, the three-round-pin standard. A single adapter is not enough for couples or families. Multi-port USB-C wall chargers with EU plugs are the smartest space-savers — one wall plug, four devices charging.

What shoes should I bring for Olbia old town cobblestones?

What are the best shoes for walking the cobblestones in Olbia's old town and Corso Umberto?

Pack flat leather sandals, espadrilles, or low-wedge sandals — never stiletto heels. Olbia old town and Corso Umberto are paved with rough granite cobblestones; thin heels get trapped and broken. For sightseeing add one pair of cushioned trainers; for boat or hiking days add reef shoes and proper trail shoes.

Olbia historic centre and Corso Umberto are pedestrian-only granite cobblestones. Stilettos break, twist ankles, and look painful to locals. Flat or low-wedge leather sandals are the local choice — chic, comfortable, and sea-breeze friendly. Add trainers for day sightseeing and reef shoes for rocky coves like Mare e Rocce.

Should I pack my own toiletries or buy them in Olbia?

Should I pack full-size shampoo and toiletries, or are they available in Olbia supermarkets?

Skip the full-size toiletries — RENTAL12 apartments stock AZULIS-brand shampoo, shower gel, hand soap and body lotion in every bathroom, and Olbia has well-stocked supermarkets including Conad, Lidl and Eurospin within 10 minutes of the centre for anything else. Bring only prescription medicine, contact lens solution, and personal-preference brands.

RENTAL12 provides AZULIS in-house toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, body lotion, hand soap) in every apartment, refreshed at every clean. For preferred brands, Conad and Lidl in Olbia stock the same European brands as most of Europe. Travel-size only is the smart play.

Do I need an Italian SIM card or eSIM for Sardinia?

What is the best Italian SIM card or eSIM for travellers visiting Sardinia in 2026?

EU citizens roam free on their home plan. Non-EU travellers benefit from an Italian eSIM — Iliad, TIM Tourist (30 GB / 30 days, €15 at the airport) or Vodafone Holiday work well across Sardinia including remote beaches. Holafly, Airalo and Saily are good app-based eSIM options for stays under two weeks.

Olbia airport has TIM Tourist kiosk in arrivals — €15 for 30 GB / 30 days. Iliad is the cheapest local SIM at €9.99/month with 250 GB. For under-2-week trips, an app-based eSIM (Holafly, Airalo, Saily) avoids physical SIM swap. Coverage is strong even in remote beach coves around Capo Coda Cavallo and Tavolara.

What paperwork do I need for driving in Olbia's ZTL?

What documents and permits do I need for driving a rental car into Olbia's ZTL restricted traffic zone?

Bring your driver's licence, passport, rental car contract, and a screenshot of the Olbia ZTL boundary map. The Comune issues no tourist permits, so park outside the historic centre at Via Sassari 20 (RENTAL12 guest parking) and walk in. Never drive into the ZTL — fines start at €87 and follow you to your home country.

The Comune di Olbia does not issue ZTL access permits to tourists or hosts — confirmed 2026. The only workaround is parking outside the ZTL boundary. Via Sassari 20 (olbiaparking.it) is RENTAL12's exclusive guest parking and is the closest legal lot to the historic centre, a 4-minute walk to Corso Umberto.

What kid-specific gear should I bring for Sardinia with children?

Which kid-specific items are essential for a Sardinia family holiday with young children?

Pack UV swim shirts (UPF 50+), kid-size snorkel masks fitted at home, mineral sunscreen SPF 50+ for children, a small first-aid kit with antihistamine cream, and aquatic shoes for rocky coves. RENTAL12 family apartments include cots, high-chairs, kid plates and cutlery, bath toys, and stair gates on request — confirm at booking.

UV swim shirts are essential because mineral sunscreen rubs off in the sea after 40 minutes; a shirt protects the back and shoulders all afternoon. Kid-size snorkel masks should be fitted at home — pharmacy queues in August are 30 minutes. Many Sardinia beaches near Olbia (Bados, Capo Coda Cavallo) are pebbly or rocky, so aquatic shoes are non-negotiable.

What can I leave home when staying at RENTAL12?

What items can I leave at home because every RENTAL12 apartment provides them?

Leave behind beach towels, hair-dryer, iron, full-size toiletries, kitchen basics (oil, salt, coffee, pasta starter), tea and coffee gear, cleaning supplies, and bed linen. RENTAL12 stocks all of these. Also skip bulky beach umbrellas, inflatables, and formal heels — buy umbrellas cheaply locally and choose flat leather sandals for evenings instead.

Our standard provisioning list is roughly 60% more comprehensive than the average Sardinia rental: full beach towels per guest, AZULIS toiletries, Miele washing machine, hair-dryer, iron, board, kitchen basics (oil, salt, pepper, ground coffee, moka pot, pasta, tea), a welcome bottle of local wine, cleaning supplies, and premium linens with two pillow options per bed. Use the saved suitcase space for prescription medicine, your favourite brand of sunscreen, or to bring home a bottle of Cannonau.
